Entering Cache Restaurant is like being transported to an upscale New York bistro. My first impression was of an ultra modern design with dramatic lighting, chrome and glass. The rather predictable look is offset with incredible windows, most of them floor-to-ceiling overlooking the urban scene of the River Market. One rather massive window in the bar actually opens and was open on the mild evening we were there. It was a total delight.
Reservations were required in the main dining room on a Monday night so we were happily seated in the less formal bar. The same menu was available and the service was attentive. We were presented a menu starting with an impressive option of appetizers including domestic "caviar". We chose Calamari with Thai Ioli. It was so good we considered just ordering more and making it our dinner. Entree options were reasonably broad ranging from Duck to Steak. The latter was a whopping size priced at $74 and cooked in a semi-open hearth in the center of the restaurant. I chose Crab Pappardelle Pasta and my companion opted for the Shellfish Paella. We were happy with our waiter choosing from the house Melbac and the wine was excellent. We finished with coffee and a shared Red Velvet Cake. It was a multi-layered confection encased in a hard candy-like frosting that was different from any I had before but well worth the extra calories.
For an evening out, it you enjoy a splash of sophistication, good food and wine, in an unhurried atmosphere, cache may be a good choice for you. If price is your priority and you are in a rush you will want to give it a pass. The restaurant is on the corner of Clinton Boulevard and River Market Drive.
